I love this scene so much. He is so confused that she could like him for who he is and not the persona he created to keep himself safe. He is surprised she still likes him even after he let his guard down. He does seem genuinely thankful that one person actually does like him even if he doesn’t understand why.
Kind of says a lot on how even the most cocky and apparently confident people have their own insecurities.
What I love about Rapunzel and Eugene is that they are both in situations that they are obviously not working all that well for them—Eugene is a thief and everyone is out to get him, while Rapunzel has been locked up in her tower but is still willing to go back because of her loyalty to her mother. While both of them obviously thinks that the other’s situation is a problem they accept each other for who they are (at that moment!), and each of them acknowledges the best in the other, while sympathizing with them for the problems they’re facing.
They make each other feel safe being themselves, which makes them open up to each other about their pasts, and why they are the way they are. And neither of them try to make the other change. Eugene doesn’t say, “You shouldn’t go back!” and Rapunzel never says, “Eugene you should quit your life of crime!” But their acceptance, affection and (eventually) love for each other—problems and all—makes both of them ultimately decide to try to solve their own problems.
